Puddles VS Pagliacci

In the beginning of Thursday's class, we watch a video of Puddles the Clown singing Royals. Puddles is a sad clown that has the Golden Voice. Knowing the song Royals, I knew that this act was not going to be exciting. Instead, I found the video interesting. For the first time, I started understanding the lyrics to the song. Singing in a tenor voice, you could hear the articulation and the emotion in his voice.

Pagliacci is an Opera that is about a love affair that occurs in a theater company group. Canio, plays a clown in the show:The Troubles of Pagliaccio but outside, he is a man who loves a woman named Nedda. However, he finds out that Nedda loves another man, ands wants to end up with her true lover. Canio becomes very upset and ends up killing Nedda and her lover during the finale of the show. What does his character look like during the show. He wears a white outfit with black buttons on his shirt, covered with white makeup to represent a clown.

Did you noticed something? Ill give you a hint.

Yes, both Canio and Puddles the Clown are wearing the same attire.

Both are sad clown but have angelic voices. They express something through music and tell us their stories. When I saw Puddles the clown wearing the crown in class, I thought about the opera. Opera is now on the top of the hierarchy of value. Is it popular? No. However, the class tone and quality of performance puts it there. It is unexpected for us to see a clown who can sing like that. In today's society, people usually see clowns either as someone scary or someone who provides entertainment by making a fool of himself; they are not taken seriously. So why is it then that when we see Puddles the Clown or Canio as Pagliacci, we look at them with amazement? We don't see them as a joke (usually) or someone to be scared of. Perhaps they want to show everyone that although they don't have the ideal look of a celebrity, they do have a particular voice. We expect them (as clowns) to act one way, sound one way etc but when they open their mouths, it something else.

Is it a coincidence or is it not. You be the judge..

Oh and here is the link to the finale of Pagliacci, worth listening if you ask me.
